KVK, Jaintia Hills is an innovative science-based institution sponsored by the Indian Council of Agriculture Research, New Delhi and was established by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Meghalaya as a Host Organization to carry forward in implementing the mandates of KVK in the district by applying the principles of “Teaching by doing” and “Learning by doing”.
The KVK was sanctioned in the year 2004 and was operationalized in the year 2009-10. Previously, the KVK was housed at the state department Farmer’s Training Institute, Rymphum, Jowai which is about 100 meter distance from the National Highway 44 on the way from Jowai to Silchar. However, since March 2023, the KVK has been shifted to its permanent campus which is located at Wahiajer, Thadlaskein Block, West Jaintia Hills (15km from Jowai). At present there is a total of 16 staffs working at the office comprising of 1 Senior Scientist and Head, 6 Subject Matter Specialists (SMS) of various disciplines (Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Protection, Agriculture Extension, Animal Science and Fisheries), 2 Programme Assistants (Computer and Technical), 1 Farm Manager, 1 Office Superintendant-cum-Accountant, 1Stenographer, 2 Supporting staffs and 2 drivers.
The office of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jaintia Hills with its mandate to teach and learn by doing, since its inception has sincerely attempted to understand the local needs of the farming community with a global thinking and local action attitude. The technological developments made in the agricultural sector have also confronted major challenges in ensuring that each and every farmer has access to such technologies. As such, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jaintia Hills has been conducting regular On–Field Trials and Front Line Demonstrations. Training Programmes, in order to disseminate the new technologies has also been organized along with other line departments and organizations. Besides, technology dissemination through media and tele-communication like radio talks, text messages and paper publications like folders, bulletin, newsletter etc has also been taken up.
The total land and total cultivable land with the KVK is 10.5ha and 8 ha respectively. The following are the demonstrations units which are being carried out at the office farm.
